Maple Syrup Season

It appears the famous Groundhog was WRONG (again) this year! Spring has come a bit early and that is shifting our maple syrup producers into high gear. With these warm days and cool nights, it’s the perfect weather to start catching the sap run. Did you know that it takes about 40 gallons of raw maple sap to get 1 gallon of finished syrup? That’s A LOT of effort…just do that math!

While maple products taste amazing, they’ve got a lot of powerful health benefits, too. Don’t you want some extra nutrients such as B-Vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and zinc? Yes, Please!

Here is a fabulous maple granola recipe from Koilene Law of Law Family Farms, producers of some of the syrup for CSA Farmers Market:

Recipe for maple granola
In bowl combine
1/4 cup olive oil
2/3 cup maple syrup
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut
3 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup lightly chopped almonds

Juice cucumber, lemon and ginger/garlic cloves for a wonderfully fresh and nutritious beverage you can enjoy anytime of the day. Tzatziki Sauce is another use for the frozen cucumbers. Recipe 2 You can also make a juice and add small amounts to the yogurt until you have the consistency you want. I thaw and juice the cucumber, lemon and garlic. NEW SOFTWARE AND WEBSITE COMING SOON!

The new software will be user friendly for customers, it will have accounting included in which customers will be able to see order history and what invoices have been paid, customers will be able to pre-order in bulk on certain items.

We are still working out some bugs on the new system. We anticipate that it will be live April 6, 2017.

On a really good note on our end I will not have to use HTML to write a weblog. There is nothing worse than putting a weblog together and have it crash right before the market opens like it did on me today! Yuck, farmers should not have to know HTML!!

We all know that we SHOULD incorporate more fresh veggies and fruit into our daily routine. But, why choose microgreens? Trust us, they are not just a side dish for your baby carrots and are more than a platform for your mini cucumbers.

First off, microgreens are grown in soil. They’re absorbing minerals from the soil as they begin to mature but are usually harvested before they are 2 weeks “old”. This makes the nutrient density high while preserving their delicate flavors and textures.

Secondly, they reportedly contain up to 6 times more vitamins and phytonutrients than their fully mature counterparts. If you are looking to increase your vitamin intake by food based methods, these are a great choice. Microgreens contain vitamins C, E, and beta carotene.

These are just 2 of the reasons CSA FARMERS MARKET is offering you microgreens from Barefoot Farm, LLC in Otisville. You can choose MILD or SPICY and bring the farm right to your kitchen!

GROWING Season Update

Growing Season Jan 2017

Plants are hunkering down, not willing to grow just yet.
During January there is not enough heat and sunlight for them to grow.
Right about the middle of February the day length, the sunshine and the warmth is enough to kick start them back into growing.
Right now farmers are ordering their seeds or plants and planning for their new plantings.

The Topaz Apple

It’s a known fact that some babies and toddlers like to bite. Thankfully, that’s a phase they grow out of! Some people, however, like their food to bite them back and they never grow out of that. Many people enjoy a flavorful Topaz apple because it has enough flavor to pack a bit of a punch, without being acidic. This spicy apple isn’t a beauty queen by any means, but it’s flavor makes up for that small deficit in spades. It is a crisp and complex eating apple but also cooks well. (We’ve made some fabulous apple crisp with Topaz!) Read more about Topaz, here

What is New at the Market

Changes are always happening here at CSA Farmers Market. Sometimes we get so darned busy that we cannot keep everyone updated.

Last week I attended the “Better Process Control” school in Lansing. It is a required schooling if we are ever to move beyond freezing and dehydrating and into canning some of the produce that we grow.

We had some electrical work done at White Pine Farm where the center of CSA Farmers Market is located. We now have enough power to hook up and operate a walk-in freezer. We anticipate a new freezer repairman and installer to stop by any day and give us some suggestions about the repair of the existing freezer or if it is not repairable we may have to purchase a new or nearly new one.

Rochester’s Out Doors Farmers Market is closed, where we have been attending this summer, although they are having an indoor market in the fire station. We have not committed to attending that market, possibly in the future we may, but for right now since it has been a challenging growing year we need a break.

Racheal our creative cook has had a family emergency that has required her to focus on other things and I have been trying to fill her shoes and pick up where she left off. We have some other creative cooks that may become involved and help us make new products in our licensed kitchen.
We have had many local customers in the North Branch and surrounding areas that would like us to have a little store front on the farm, so we have been exploring that and plan in the near future to have that happen.

Green Earth Grocery is permanently closing soon, rather than to have customers that enjoyed what Green Earth had to offer some of the employees from Green Earth will be helping with a booth starting in January at the indoor Davison Farmers Market. Products there would include local organic that CSA Farmers Market has as well as many of the unique items Green Earth used to carry.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS

I am beyond thrilled to find these wine bottles! My dear mother who passed away last January worked at the LaSalle Winery in Farmington, Mi, in the 1940s. She often spoke of working there where there was always an open bottle of wine in the ladies room for sampling if you wished. This will be an awesome birthday gift for my sister this month! Thank you, and I’m also glad to help you attain your goal for the walk-in Freezer! Tamara Meier

Yumm! Tomato Soup Powder Mix was good. Louis Kasl

We are so pleased with the splendid variety and fine quality of the food you offer. A minimum of 80% of the food we consume comes from this CSA. The percentage goes down a bit in the winter, but our meat/poultry/fish supply lasts through the winter. So does our supply of shallots, which hold well. Last year, we continued to order your apples all through the winter for eating freshly sliced, for apple crisps, and for luscious apple pie omelets. Thanks to all the farmers.
Donna Larkin Mohr

We LOVE suggestions and feed back!
Feedback helps us to improve! We need to hear the good “warm fuzzy” feedback, BUT we also need to hear the: "Hey what’s up with this?” kind of feedback. One customer pointed out to us that some of our tomatoes were not as flavorful as they had been in past years. The weather plays its part in how tasty the tomatoes are and also the way we handle them contributes. As a result of the feedback we no longer allow the tomatoes in the cooler and we now pack them separately in the morning.
Thanks for the feedback, it helps us and you!

FRESH CIDER IS BACK

Are you missing our Almar Orchards fresh organic apples? Well, some people regard our cider as the best they have EVER had because of the fabulous apples it’s made from! Simply put, we choose only the best apples to go into our apple cider. There will not be any ground-picked apples in our batches of cider – the pigs get those. The trained professionals at our Almar Orchards pick all the apples, beginning in July and going strong until just before a freeze, around Halloween. Then, the 16-bushel bins are stored at very specific temperature and humidity settings in our giant walk in storage coolers. When they have been properly seasoned, they are hand sorted, although we may run them on the sorting machine for a preliminary grading. The prettiest apples are sold in our store and in our partner establishments, like CSA Farmer’s Market. The apples that have more than a blemish or two are sent to the juice bin and then ground and squeezed.

Here is a great article stating some health benefits of apple cider:

Lettuce Loves The cooler Temperatures

YES—Dale from White Pine Farm grows some wonderful lettuce. When the weather turned super hot this last summer for a long time it made the lettuce bolt and become bitter, so the ground was reworked and eventually new lettuce was planted. Again NOW there is wonderful lettuce on the website.

Growing Season Update Aug 25, 16

YES!!! Rain and cooler temperatures. It is too late for many of the crops, although others it will benefit. For some extremely hot and dry crops they were overly thirsty and drank too much so they sometimes can explode overnight. Kind of like us humans when we have been out in the heat too long we drench ourselves drinking so much water we get a belly ache. We are very glad the heat wave is over with and some growers had to plow under there failed crops to start preparing the ground for other crops.

Lettuce loves the cooler weather so you should be able to have some lettuce soon. When the heat wave hit the lettuce became bitter.

Sweet Potatoes are looking good, they like the heat.

THANKS for your patience and understanding!!

Please at all times let us know if there are any problems with your order or produce. We want to fix, fix, fix. We are motivated to give you the best Michigan Organic Grown Product possible. Customer Comments

CUSTOMER COMMENTS

Farming this year has been rough for those that live in Lapeer and Genesee County. The intense heat and the lack of rain has created havoc. I truly have learned greater appreciation for the farms out West, that the last few years have experienced extreme drought.
Michigan’s west coast, Saginaw Bay and some other areas in Michigan historically get more rainfall than the farms in our area. Even though we would much rather be selling our own corn which unfortunately did not make it a Saginaw Bay Organic Farm (Englehard) is harvesting his sweet corn for us.
Here is a letter we received thanking us for this.

Hi, Marian,
Just wanted to say that your efforts to find another sweet corn supplier are very much appreciated – the corn was great! I picked up my order late on a Friday, didn’t store them very well other than throwing them in the refrig, and didn’t get to roast the ears until late Sunday. I expected the kernels to be soft and lacking in flavor. To my surprise, they were still sweet and crisp-fresh! We had gone to another corn roast (but boiled) on Friday, with corn from another local farmer. The ears looked great, but the flavor wasn’t quite there; it paled in comparison to your supplier’s!
Thanks again! For the best stuff!
Blessings!
Pat Gall

Cucumber Problems also occurred this year, under normal weather conditions short stays in the walk in cooler have not been a problem, this year the drastic temperature change created condensation on the cucumbers causing them an earlier demise.
We have since remedied the problem and given credit to many customer.
In the mass emails that went out asking for feedback we also heard good things.
My cucumber was perfect! Deb
The cukes I received were perfect and tasty No complaints here. Thx Dale Mike
We are grateful to a customer who brought this to our attention the cucumber problem. Cukes sales went down somewhat after our experience and Because of this we are now pursuing a license through MDA to can product so we can now preserve and sell the excess over the full year.
Milk from Hilhof!!! Does not like getting over 50 degrees and we are sticklers to make sure that it doesn’t although accidents do happen and not all customers are aware of the temperature. In an email sent to all who ever bought the milk we also received some nice feedback.

I have their cream and love it! Martha
I opened a bottle of ours and it is perfect. Pamela
My milk has been good!!! Tina
I ordered milk from Hilhof one time a few weeks ago. It was good. It lasted at least two weeks. Alicia
I love the milk & cream! No problems with spoilage here. Thanks Barb
The milk I’ve gotten from Hilhoff has always been wonderful. Karen
I’m always impressed with how long the milk lasts in our refrigerator. Amy
We fairly regularly buy your wonderful organic chocolate milk. My spouse puts a generous amount in his morning coffee,so very decadent. Every quart has been fresh and sometimes lasts almost two weeks. So, not only do we have no complaints, we do have loads of kudos to offer the farmers who provide this delicious treat. Many thanks Donna

We love all feedback!!! Good and bad!!!
The sooner we hear that there is a problem the sooner we can rectify it, so all feedback is important to us.
By your supporting CSA Farmers Market you are helping to preserves thousands of acres of farmland in Michigan that are in organic production. By giving us feedback you are helping us to improve.
We love the partnership and the relationship we develop with our customers and all customers are welcome to visit the farms.
When we do not hear from a regular customer we worry. Sometimes the system kicks them off because of internet email problems which we have very little control over (although we will be working to rectify that) and sometimes they have moved, or become ill. We also worry that they may be unhappy with us.
Please everyone stay in touch with us, we are very busy farming getting very little sleep while trying to keep up and we never want to neglect anyone, there just isn’t always enough hours in the day.

APPLES ARE HERE

Jersey Mac Apples, one of the earliest apples in Michigan.
They are a medium sized red apple with yellow/green splashes. Flesh is crisp and juicy with a tart flavor that is somewhat sweet. They are good for fresh eating, pies and applesauce, the tender flesh cooks quickly, so add a thickener if making a pie.
These early apples Do Not Store well and will need to be refrigerated.

Almars have chosen to put these in a cooler at about 34 degrees for a week before selling them to make sure the flavor is to their standards.

Next week there will be Paula Reds and

Growing Season Update July 28, 16

Another Long Dry Spell for our Farmers, it has been a couple of weeks since Laws, White Pine Farm and some other farms have had rain. Sweet Corn is stunted and other crops are stunted. Time to pull out the catalogs and look at irrigation.

Apples will be coming soon. Within the next couple of weeks you should see some apples on the website. The early summer apples need to be refrigerated as they do not keep as long as the hardier fall apples.

Sweet Corn is out from near the Saginaw Bay Area, The Saginaw Bay area on average gets 4 more inches of rain as compared to the Thumb area. Dennis Engelhard grows the organic sweet corn, so while the participating farmers (ones who help make the market operate) have no corn Dennis came through.

Fresh Blueberries the Law family has been picking from a small orchard locally who does not use any chemicals and grow organically.
